An industrial piercing is when holes are pierced through the cartilage atop and halfway down the ear and a thin metal rod is placed through the two holes. Since this type of piercing goes through sensitive and tough cartilage, it can be rather painful and prone to infection. It is essential you care for the piercing correctly to promote healing and avoid soreness, swelling and bacterial growth.

Things You’ll Need
-
Lean your head under a faucet and run warm water on your ear for 30 seconds. This loosens up dried skin and crusted areas around the piercing.
-
Lather up antibacterial soap and warm water and lightly rub the metal rod with your pinky, twisting the piercing around to coat it with soap. Work the soap behind the rod on the inside of your ear and around the pierced holes for three minutes.
-
Run your ear under warm water for 30 seconds to rinse away the soap. Let the area air-dry. Do not pat dry with a towel.
Tips & Warnings
- Wash the piercing in the morning and evening for one year as it can take a year for the piercing to heal.
- Do not touch the area unless you are cleaning it. Touching it will cause bacteria to spread and pain.
- Do not change the metal rod for at least six months unless your piercing artist advises otherwise. When you switch it out, wash the new jewelry thoroughly with soap and warm water.
- Do not use rubbing alcohol to clean jewelry while it is in your ear as it will irritate the area.
- If you notice yellow discharge, redness or red lines, swelling or have extreme pain see your doctor as your piercing could be infected.
